General

Ambergrove is a fantasy world connected to Earth by humanity. Before humanity poisons it, that is. The nature of this link with Earth means that there are many things we think we know, from history or fantasy, that are not what they seem.

Ambergrove worldmap (as of Ranger’s Odyssey):

The mainland has the most diversity, due mainly to its size and the temperament of the forest dwarves. The other places each hold one main humanoid race, as the races of Ambergrove were corrupted by Earth and each began to war with each other and pull away, secluding themselves in their own lands.

Dragons

Evil dragons are imprisoned in Fengel. Good dragons live in the northern land by the Dragon’s Teeth. They mostly keep to themselves, letting other creatures grow without them while they keep their duty, guarding their side of the Dragon’s Teeth. Their capitol is Balaur, and different types of dragons live in the other settlements. All settlement names mean “dragon” in one language or another.

Giants

The giants live in the northeast. The land allows them to have specialized settlements for each type of giants. Hill giants, swamp giants, fire giants, sand giants, and more. Other peoples stay away from them out of fear.

Gnomes

Gnomes live in the lower west, tucked in the shadow of the forbidden lands. This keeps them safe from many of the other marauders. They live in and around the hills of this land, and are afraid of most of the other creatures in Ambergrove. They do not get along with much of anyone, either when others visit or when they venture out. They and the mining dwarves have a sort of vendetta due to their proximity. Gnomes blend in with the hills for their own safety, and pureblooded gnomes are the colors of the earth.

Forest Dwarves

The forest dwarves are unique to Ambergrove, and their capitol is Aeunna. Other villages are nestled in forested areas in the mainland. The nature of the travel between Earth and Ambergrove over the centuries meant that many misconceptions made their way through. The mining dwarves were all that people thought of, so they assumed that all dwarves were small. Not so. The forest dwarves have the same general look as the mining dwarves—burly and muscled, and the men are bearded—but whereas the mining dwarves’ size allows them to delve into smaller caverns in the mountains, the forest dwarves grow tall like trees. Forest dwarves are nature-driven and gentle giants. The pureblooded forest dwarves have hair and skin of greens, browns, and reds—colors of the forest.

Humans

Humans share the mainland with the forest dwarves. Their capitol is Zahur. Each human village is inspired by a different culture from ancient Earth. The humans, and those of human blood who may pass as humans, are the only ones who can travel between Earth and Ambergrove. It was the humans who first settled in what they called Lesser Earth (now the forbidden lands) and built cities and recreated modernities they missed from Earth. These cities grew out of control, as did their people, and all of Ambergrove broke apart because of it.

Mining Dwarves

The mining dwarves live in the southwest. As the gnomes live in the hills, the mining dwarves live in the mountains. They are very similar to the stereotypical dwarves in fantasy. Think Lord of the Rings and Dungeons and Dragons. They are a gruff and grumpy people who mostly only get along with their forest kin. As stereotypical fantasy suggests, they are talented smiths, and their mastery of the mountains and their secrets are unparalleled. Pureblooded mining dwarves are the colors of fire and forge—mainly fiery reds, charcoal greys, and cavern blacks.

Sea Elves

The sea elves live in the cluster of islands to the east. They are famed warriors and sailors. Their talents with the seas cause some to think that magic never really left Ambergrove. They live on the back of a rocky serpent and its eggs—or so their tales say. Their ships are unique blues and greens, blending in with the seas completely. The people, too, are the colors of the sea—greens and blues, and some purples, coral, and coral pink. The sea elves are thought by many of the other races to be barbaric, and they are the only ones that require their citizens to complete a trial to avoid banishment at the age of fifteen. Any sea elf who failed to complete the Serpent’s Gauntlet who did not perish in the attempt was executed or banished from the sea elves’ lands, never to return. In Ranger’s Odyssey, Finn learns that this dark custom is far worse than he had dreamed.

The Gods and Goddesses

Each of the deities of Ambergrove has their own individual island in the northwest, through the Dragon’s Teeth. Not much is known about their lands, because not many have been there. As the tales of Ambergrove expand, so will stories about them.
